Note This is a 19th century Japanese fish bowl. It revives a 15th century Chinese design. Japanese manufacturers produced ceramics based on early Chinese styles in order to meet the demand for blue and white china in the West during the late 19th century. They were sold in London at shops such as Libertys. The inside of this bowl is painted with fish and the outside with flower scrolls. It originally belonged to Whistler.

Note This is a Qing dynasty salad bowl painted with vases of flowers and mountain riverscapes. Salad bowls formed a part of dinner services that were made in the late eighteenth century for export to the West. This one would have been part of a standard service ordered in bulk by the East India Company. This particular item once belonged to Whistler.
