Note This is a Qing dynasty cup made for the Western market. Notice that the cup has no handles. Handles were not used by either Chinese or Europeans at this time. Saucers were a purely western requirement. Covers were used to keep the tea hot. The stylised decoration may represent a tree of peaches or pomegranates, peonies and diving swallows. All are Chinese symbols of good fortune and long life. This cup was one of a set of six that once belonged to Whistler.
