Marks On underside of lid a boy’s head is inscribed in a roundel; on the base is inscribed a lion rampant (.934), boy’s head in a roundel and "o" (date mark of 1823); on base: “Benten and Zonen” (maker); on base: series of characters: "I", "3"over "o", "I " over "A" and "I" 5; inscribed with a butterfly.

Note Whistler's butterfly monogram is engraved on one side of this Dutch sugar basin. The handle on the lid is of ebonised wood.
