Note This arrangement of pictures is a partial reconstruction of Whistler’s 1883 exhibition of his Venice etchings, Arrangement in White and Yellow. Whistler wanted the whole exhibition to be a work of art that would complement his pictures. That is why he called the scheme an arrangement. Everything was based on the colours white and yellow: walls, furniture, floor matting, ornaments and flowers, and even costumes, invitations and catalogues.
Notice that the etchings were hung in a decorative and balanced way. In the centre are two different states of the etching Nocturne. These are balanced with The Palaces and The Doorway on the left and Nocturne: Palaces and The Riva, No. 1 on the right. Visitors admired the fact that the pictures were arranged sensitively and with a feeling for beauty. They particularly appreciated that they weren’t crowded together but were given their own space.
