Interiors
Whistler also became involved with interior design. His schemes were remarkable for their apparent simplicity. He painted the rooms of his homes in subtle colours (grey, yellow, blue), hung them with Japanese fans and prints, placed rush matting on the floor and furnished them with simple, unornamented, Japanese-inspired tables and chairs. The effect was very different from the elaborate interiors of many Victorians. Whistler also designed interiors for friends and clients.
