Note This is a trowel-shaped palette knife with a steel blade. Palette knives came in various materials: steel, horn or ivory. Steel palette knives were not suitable for every pigment. They reacted against certain colours, such as Naples Yellow. The palette knife was mainly used for mixing paint. Occasionally it was used for applying paint to the canvas if the artist wanted a particularly thick effect or to scrape paint back.
