Note Whistler’s steel etching needles with their spiral twist in the middle were made especially for him by an instrument-maker in Paris. They were smaller and more elegant than the needles normally used by etchers. This style of needle came to be known as a “Whistler”. He frequently carried several around with him in a little silver box.
