Note When Whistler painted out of doors he used a hinged metal palette like this one, which he would prepare in the studio with small amounts of pure paint inserted into the compartments. The palette had a lid which when closed would protect the paint during transport. You can see that this folding watercolour palette is covered with areas of pure watercolour paint, and some washes of mixed colours. The pure colours are arranged differently in comparison to Whistler's usual palette layout.
