Edward G. Kennedy, The Etched Work of Whistler, New York, The
Grolier Club, 1910 (408, 2nd of 3 states).
Note This image shows the 'red light' area of Amsterdam at night. Whistler was attracted to the scene by the pattern created by the rays of light from the lamp and the shapes created by the different sized, lighted windows, and their reflections in the water. Look closely and you will see figures silhouetted in the windows. Compare the number of figures in the etching and the plate. The etching shows an earlier state than the plate and there are differences. Notice also that the image on paper is the reverse of the image on the plate, this is due to the printing process, when the etching plate is placed face down on the paper. Look how Whistler suggested the broken surface of the water and its reflections through the irregular cross-hatched lines in the lower half of the etching. Contrast this with the more uniform lines of the solid building.
