Note In 1896 Whistler and his wife Beatrix [link – Key figures], who was dying from cancer, stayed at the Savoy Hotel in London, which had a view over the river Thames. It was from here that this lithotint was made. Charing Cross Bridge can be seen on the left of the image. Notice the puff of smoke, suggesting that a train is crossing the bridge. The picture is full of little details. Can you see the people walking along the riverbank? There are also some horses and carriages. The trees, with their long limbs and delicately suggested foliage, give a decorative elegance to the picture. This is one of Whistler’s most dreamy Nocturnes, and beautifully portrays the light mists that hung over the river and the reflections of buildings and sails. The technique of lithotint gives the scene a painterly look, almost like watercolour.
