Whistler’s Mistresses

Weary
The sitter for this portrait was Joanna (“Jo”) Hiffernan

Before Whistler married Beatrix, he had a number of mistresses. His two main lovers, Joanna Hiffernan [link – Key figures] (in the 1860s) and Maud Franklin [link – Key figures] (in the late 1870s and 1880s), were also his models. Whistler had two daughters by Maud, Ione Franklin [link – Key figures] and Maud McNeill Whistler Franklin [link – key figures]. Whistler cruelly left Maude at the time of his marriage. Whistler also had a son, Charles James Whistler Hanson [link – Key figures], the result of an affair with a parlour maid, Louisa Fanny Hanson [link – Key figures]. He was brought up by Joanna Hiffernan.
